I'm really stuck on the slide part of the verse on Ants. It's really bugging me.

I've watched this video and still can't get it to resemble anything like it.

I'm going so crazy.

This is so frustrating. I've watched all sorts of videos of Ants now. I watch Pat's, but it's just so confusing. The verse is so tricky for me. I can sort of get it by just picking the strings, but that's not how Dave plays it, so that's not how I want to play it. The strumming and muting is making me insane.

What are you having trouble with? The slide part, where he slides from 4/5?

Yeah, the slides during the verse are just killing me.

I'm having issues with the muting and strumming. I've been trying to get my fingers situated like in Pat's video, but I'm having a difficult time putting what I see into action.

You could try doing hammer-ons (4h5) instead of slides.

I'll give that a try, but I'd like to learn it the proper way.

Man, I wish I knew someone who knew how to play Dave stuff on guitar that could just show me in person.

i suck at muting. I just ont understand how its done, so i feel your pain man. If you need to mute the bottm 3 string, like on Ants, how then do you mure the low E?

If there is anyone who would like to make a little video of the strumming hand for Ants, that would just be great! :D

Another thing I was wondering.

In songs like Big Eyed Fish, when you have to play individual strings, it looks like Dave is still just strumming away in videos. Specifically in Big Eyed Fish during the verse. Is that just because he's using a 12-string or how does he manage that?

So for like Big Eyed Fish, when he plays the:

E:-------------------
B:-------------------
G:-------------------
D:-/9---9\5---5---4-- <---4
A:-/7---7\3---2---2-- <---1
E:-------------------

Is he muting the 7 when he plays the 9? Then mutes the 9 when he plays the 7?

Im not sure if I get you, but Dave mutes all the strings except those two thats he's playing. He mutes them with his fretting hand.

If you look at a video of Dave playing it it should help.

Dave is muting the strings he's not playing. That way he can strum away a lot harder and not worry about hitting any unwanted notes/strings. Here's an example of what Dave might play

-
-
x
9
7
x

So he's playing the 7 and 9 together on one stroke and not individually?

I think we're on the same page now.

Also, does Dave always mute open strings? The "x's" on the tab means that string should be muted, correct? So if there's no x, those strings are played, right?
