Led Zeppelin cover - Battle of Evermore

I have to apologize for the quality of some parts - the mix sounds much better if you use headphones. I decided to sit down with my roomates Mac and try out Garage Band...put this together:

This is my favorite Zeppelin song so forgive me if I come off a little harsh. The mix, like you said, sounds like shit. What instruments are you playing? Its a cool take on the song, but I think it would be much easier to record if it was all acoustic. I was also looking forward to hearing vocals (which really make the song).

Overall, it sounds like your playing was pretty good, but the recording/mixing sounds horrible, like its underwater. I don't think your recording technique allow your style of this song to shine. It would sound much better if it was all just acoustic, or if you had much better recording equipment.

Just kidding. I would've loved to have an acoustic or a mandolin...but all I have here is my electric, so its all done on that. I'm not so sure it would be easier to record with acoustic instruments though, because the software I'm using is garbage. It's the best I have available though

think it'd sound much better acoustic... not bad though. I was excited with the title, but my expectations were lowered after reading speen's post

I too love this song. This isn't bad imo. However, the electric guitar and mixing make it sound almost like a midi.

Tell us about your recording setup, there may be ways to get this to sound better.

The main problem is you only have one instrument and you are trying to make a very deep layered sound. Its possible but very hard.

Again, your guitar playing is very good, i enjoyed it!

My setup was basically my electric plugged directly into the line-in of an Apple laptop (not sure about the model of the laptop as its not mine but its brand new.) I used Garage Band (http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband/) which came with the computer to record 4 layers. There's not really much else I can say. But the hissing and murkiness seem to be there no matter how much I toy with the settings, sounds, pan tracks, etc. Its a decent program in terms of playing with sounds and editing, but not so good in terms of clarity and quality.

What do most people that don't have hundreds to spend on equipment use? I'm really not too savvy on this subject as you can tell.

I've been told that Cool Edit is a better program for simple multi track purposes....either that or a 4 track recorder

Yeah, cool edit is great, thats what i use, lots of decent effects, a powerful equalizer and lots and lots of tracks. If you are just going to record guitar, i would suggest looking into the line 6 guitar tone port. It comes with all sorts of virtual effects pedals that sound pretty good. With something like that you could put different effects on each track thus separating them out a little. the ohter way to make this sound better is through arrangement and EQ. You want to give each track its own "sonic space." in other words, if the tracks have a lot of overlap in frequency i.e. in the 300hz range, its going to sound muddy.
