New York to Amsterdam flights for $399+Tax through STA right now. even cheaper i think if yoiu are a student. I checked two mid week flights for a non student aorund the time of the amsterdam show and it ended up being a total of $465 after taxes.
I think student rate was $454 after taxes

as of now the only way i can make it is via last second tickets. Sometimes you can get cheap airfare from here to amsterdam if its less than a week in advance and the flight is empty. Then its jjust a hustel to find a hostel.
