Original : All The Time (Need Mixing advice)

Hello all,

I'm just finishing recording a new song. I've still got a lot to do before this one is done and released, but I'm trying to work on my mixing and editing and was wondering if I could get some feedback on the best way to mix this.

- Where should each of the instruments be panned (guitar strumming, guitar secondary, electric guitar, shaker, vocals, background vocals)?
- As far as the volume of each, are they balanced right now?
- Any other mixing/editing suggestions?

Please not that this is surely not a completed song. Some vocal parts will surely be re-recorded (cause they're way off key or too quiet). But I wanted to get some initial feedback. However, if you (for example) think that an actual part of the music sucks - let me know.

I like this song.

I want the guitar with the flanger to be panned to the right. I don't know why. I feel like it's too much in the right headphone. Either that, or balance it out with something else to the right. Possibly the second guitar.

My preference with my own music is to have rhythm guitar panned left with second to the right, and ambient/electric up the middle -- or I'll record the rhythm twice, pan it right and left, and fill it out with a bassline/drum track center-panned, adjusting the ambience depending on the number and how I want them to interact with the vocals. Really, I just listen to music I like and imitate the production depending. I pan my guitars like Lillywhite, my ambient/lick guitars like Godrich (of Beck fame), and my drums like Guy Sigsworth (Bjork) or Cindy Burnay. Sometimes I shoot for a Richard D. James vibe.

Vocals too loud right there. You could probably maintain that same volume and pan the backing vocals outward, or screw with the bandwith/some kind of matrix reverb (of which, if you read my other posts, I'm obviously a big fan; I like the epic choral-like feel it gives to the vocals, but I'm a chamber orchestra kind of guy).

I like it, though. Appeals to the my ears appetite.

there is alot of static on the recording.

as far as leveling, doesnt really matter how you arrange it as long as there is some seperation panning wise between the different guitar tracks.

the vocals need to be turned up or have everything else turned down. this is a real busy song and you may wanna take some of the effects off the vocals, bring ir back down to earth

i actually really liked all of the effects you used on the vocals. usually i like for vocals to be a bit more natural, but it just really fit the song. if your vocals were just a bit stronger i think it would have been perfect

i think the stronger vocal thing is the only critique i can give...i really like it. it really reminds me something, but i can't put my finger on it

edit: i think i hear a little bit of elliot smith, especially in the vocal mixing, sufjan stephens, and...and you can laugh if you want, but dc talk from the supernatural album.

I'm really trying to work on my vocals. I took several vocal lessons not too long ago, so I think I know what I need to do, but actually doing it... I'm still not really getting it. I'm sure with more practice though I'll get there.

Thanks a lot of the comments. The only effects on the vocals I have is a Volume Booster. What I did though is I recorded 2 layers of the same vocal track and panned them left and right to create a little more volume. I like the effect it gives, but I'll turn the panning down just a bit so that they match up a little better and it's not as overpowering.

Thanks I released the song now and updated the link. Vocals turned up a tad, did some panning on the other instruments. I'm moving on.
