mandolin fretting

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

mandolin fretting

Post by seth_southerland »

i just got my hands on an old mandolin

are the strings on them supposed to be harder to press down than the strings on a guitar? i have to really mash on them to get them down.
if they aren't supposed to be then i'll assume that the strings are old and need to be changed.

well obviously they'll probably be old, but they're a little harder to push down then a guitar since they're not as long, and you have to press down two at a time.

pictures?

Yeah, mando strings require a much firmer touch.

If you grab new strings, try to find the Elixir mandolin strings. I have them on mine and really like them. They're so much different than the Elixirs for guitar.

the action might be a little high on it as well. you may want to take it to a mandolin mechanic or something and have him check it out for ya.
