Strumming pattern and slaps for solo songs

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Strumming pattern and slaps for solo songs

Post by rtg815 »

Ok I've been playing DMB songs for a couple weeks now and i can hit the correct notes and chords, but ive run into the most common of all problems, I cant seem to get the strumming pattern right. The song that i am mainly focused on right now is "the best of whats around"

I have a copy of a supposed unrealsed studio demo, it has Dave playing the song solo and singing, and i am trying to mimick the sound he gets from that. There is a sound which i thought was a mutted strum that he uses to create a beat, but it being a strum didnt make sense so im guessing its a slap, has anyone tried to learn the precussion strumming for this song and if so, let me know your experience.

Very good question -

I don't exactly know the perfect beat notation, so I'm not going to attempt to write that out, but I do know if you tap your foot 16 times to one measure of the verse, that's the relative beat and you just have to build your strumming pattern around that. Could be 4/4 timing with just long verses but.....You just have to know the beat, and then just listen to dave's strumming patterns for each "beat" because they change rapidly. If you can get the beat down, you just need to listen to the strums, and I recommend the Lost Acoustics' version. If ya want a listen, just ask. I'd be glad to send it to ya. Until then, Good Luck

No offense, but isn't a solo acoustic studio demo version what you would want?

when it comes to playing solo you can't be afaid to experiment, such as slowing down the whole rythym of the song, adding percussive strokes on the downbeat of the missing drums, and strumming louder or softer depending on the tone of the song. You dont have to be perfect , just make sure its in time and has a little soul in it.

Download a wave editor and slow down your mp3. It's way easier to learn songs by hearing. I always do that when I wanna learn solo stuff.
