I think him and some friends tripped out on a beach and dave fell down a hill (hence trippin') and someone said the song sounded like hillbillies on acid (billies).

Eh, trippin' is a common phrase used for being high (particularly when being paranoid about being caught or getting into a bad high).

im sure all the potheads know you dont trip unless you smoke ALOT of weed. you trip if you do shrooms, acid, or any psychadelic. so im guessing it was acid

i think its probable that dave would smoke to get the creative juices flowing when trying to make a new song...it works most of the time

I don't know if anyone else here read the Rolling Stone article before Stand Up came out talking about their experience in the studio with Batson, but there were some very revealing details in that story. When the journalist came to the studio, he commented that there were joints being passed around, as well as mentioning a pitcher of mushroom tea that was in the fridge in the studio. It sounds like they were having quite the party with Batson. I swear that Boyd and Dave seem high as hell on the DVD side of Stand Up, when Dave is talking about Boyd's great line in American Baby (watch it again and you will know what I mean).
