Frustrated with "So Much To Say"

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I appreciate all the input. I’ve been playing for about ten years now, and although I consider myself to be a slow-learner, I have mastered some fairly difficult styles & techniques. I suppose that’s why I’ve had to wait until now to try to master a song like “So Much To Say.” Matthews definitely takes it to another level - The guy is truly amazing! I consider myself to be a decent Travis-style picker, but lately I’ve been aiming to improve my sense of rhythm.

I prefer the black, Jim Dunlop (1mm) picks.

If it means anything, I use a medium .5mm pick and it sounds great. I don't know if it has anything to do with "getting it to sound just like Dave" but I started out on heavy picks like the ones you use and as soon as I made the switch, I could tell the difference. Just my .02

This song took me awhile to get too and it still doesn't sound exactly alike. i like to ram hard on the trebble strings near the bridge when playing the 555 pinky deali. it gives it a cool sound

i think a lot of people also underemphasize the B-->C# (4-6) slide. The slides, that groovy flow is whate makes the song kick ass. i know this is redundant but try your best to keep the riff non-mechanical.

I dont play the 555, I just play it -55. No one has ever acused me of it not sounding correctly, even though, technically and mechanically, it isn't.

The Mysterious Note(s)

Okay here’s the deal. I’ve been struggling to perfect this riff for over three weeks now. I’ve made some good progress, but I have yet to get it right.

Quite frankly, I’ve seen and heard others try, but I have yet to see or hear someone else recreate the Originators style & technique. That is, until I saw Guitarman41 post his demonstration on YouTube yesterday.

I’ve suspected there is a tactical reason Dave chose to bar the fives with his pinky, for quite sometime. I could not confirm this until I watched “The Guitarman’s” video several times. I believe Dave & “The Guitarman” use this technique to enable them to grab a note that is not accounted for in the DMBTab.

Trouble is, I still cannot figure-out what “The Guitarman” is doing with his other fingers while his pinky is barring the fives. He appears to be slapping (fretting) a note on the A-string with his index finger, as he slaps (bars) the fives with his pinky. This “mysterious note” is not accounted for on any tablature I have seen. This note seems to be what is missing from my efforts.

On a positive note: I finally discovered how to sound-off that distinct succession of muted notes which coincide with the succession of treble notes that are repeated in the intro. I’m pretty sure the muted notes are: C, B, C# (on the G-string), A (on the D-string) and E (on the low, E-String) respectively.

i didn't really pay that close attention but i checked out the CP concert tonight and found that there is a note missing on the tab that dave plays.
this is how it appears and sounds right. Im not going to play it this way because i like the why i play it and it sounds fine. oh yeah and its easier. LOL

if you have an electric handy practice it on that. ive done that on quite a few songs im learning and then move to acoustic. it may just work for me, but generally imo an electric is easier to play. you dont even have to plug it in, but it helps with the technique and allows you to focus on the actual mechanics of playing the song.

another thing i dont think anyone mentioned, but i think that extra note you are hearing is dave may be hitting the 7 twice after the slide. thats the way i play it and it matches up better. i learned it from the live in chicago, bc its my favorite version.

that is not an extra note kanter doesn't tab how many time you play a string

What I usually do is I palm mute the slide on the low E string, and I also slide down from the 5th fret to the 3rd fret to finish the riff. If you mute the low notes it will bring more attention to the high slide.
