You might want to watch a video of him performing the song. The shuffle bit during the verse is a bit tough to do well. You really have to feel the song, you have to have the rhythm down. You kind of have to do a slap-up kind of thing, after each note... kind of a lazy shuffle feeling to it. That's probably the part you will have most trouble getting down really well. And again, I would suggest watching SRV in action to get an idea.

I think one of the key things is to mute the strings right after you do the lazy 'slap up' thing after each note of the shuffle. That's one thing SRV was GOOD at: muting strings.

If memory serves me correctly, I think it sounds like a 12-string that he's using doesn't it? That guy was incredible

It was probably easy for him since he was used to using incredibly thick strings on his guitars (the man used .13s as a high e string!!! - He used to super-glue his callouses back on his fingers!).

Watching those old videos makes me feels sad that we had to lose such an incredible person like Stevie.

it also seems he uses a "chugging" type muting strum during the verse

E. During the solo, he switches between the Em and E (mostly pentatonic) scales.

I learned the tune a while back from an SRV tablature book I bought. I did a quick search just now and didn't find a tab that was very accurate, though some were okay. I did find a very good powertab for the tune, though. If you don't have the program (Power Tab Editor), you will have to download it (I'm not sure if you can anymore because of all the copyright crap going on recently, but you can try, just google "Power Tab Editor"). Here's a link to the powertab:

And technique-wise, I would say watch a video of him playing it ( the Austin City Limits performance from '83 would be a good one if you can find it on the net). The shuffle is hard to get down just right. Some great blues licks to learn in that song - definately worth learning.

Thanks a lot thats a way better tab than what ive been using and powertab is a sweet program. There is no doubt its a good song to learn, i love the blues licks. Still working on the shuffle tho, i actually like playing it on my acoustic more than my electric for some reason.
