i was fooling around one day online and typed in " best acoustic guitar player" on google. tommy emanual came up under the words "very well may be the worlds best acoustic guitar player"
i listened so some of his samples. i thought it was very good to say the least.
you guys ever heard of him? if so what do you think? where does he stand with all the great acoustic players in the world of playing?
He's definately good, though I don't like him as much as another fantastic guitar picker, Doyle Dykes (though I may be a bit biased since I saw Doyle in concert a few times). You should definately check out Doyle, too.
Tommy Emmanuel is simply amazing. He's heavily (and I do mean HEAVILY) influenced by Chet Atkins. Tommy is from Australia so he's not in the states a whole lot.
I would gladly pay to see him play.

he came to syracuse once and i didnt get to catch him... i was so upset

Tommy Emmanuel is an amazing guitarist...and he not just fingerstyle. He can flatpick with the best of them. He can also use effect pedals with an acoustic to blow your mind....there is one song he does, I think it is called Indoctrunation (or something like that) that is mostly improv where he uses delay and volume pedals (among others) while using slides, drum brushes, hand taps, etc. to produce a truely primal sound....just leaves you spellbound.
He comes to our area every year for a 3 day "Tommyfest" where he does a 4 to 6 hour workshop during the day (for 2 days) followed by a show each night. Last year it was $120 for the whole weekend, including both the workshops. I couldn't make it to the workshops (dammit) but got to the shows.
As for being the best guitarist in the world, well that is entirely subjective, but the man "lives" for the guitar...and it shows. What a talent. Plus he has the stage presence to back it up.
I think he has come out with an instructional DVD. Haven't seen it but I bet it is worth it.
I've got a short mpeg clip of him from a performance in France that starts to show his talent. When I get home tonight I'll find it. Can someone host it for me?

What do I need to host it?
I definitely want to see it.
Further, I'm gonna start investigating this guy...
I don't know about the thumb pick, but it might be a nice thing too.
