obviously, index finger bars the 1st fret...but for the 3rd fret on B, G, and D....do you use a combo of your ring and pinky finger...or just the ring finger?? i'm trying to find the best, most accurate technique for this...any help would be appreciated...thanks
youre supposed to barre the 333 with your ring finger, contorting it upward to leave the 1 on the high e barred w/ your index. Dave uses his pinky. People with small hands (usually girls) use their 2, 3, and 4 finger.
Its best to use your ring finger, cause then your pinky is open to hammer or whatever.

that's what i do, i use just my ring finger...still working on getting the high e to keep ringing

thanks man, i'd rather avoid all bad habits if possible...i will not practice that style...i feel more comfortable with the ring-finger-only method anyway

Honestly, dont worry about the high e ringing out, I highly doubt anyone even trys or does it all that often and the difference is so minute it doesnt matter.

Thats true...most people dont. You're already playing that note with the bass note anyway, so its not too big a deal. It just adds a little texture if you're able to do it.

I doubt Dave ever plays the full Bb chord like that. I mean when does he play it? gravedigger? I think he just plays the x-1-x-3-x-x or maybe x-1-3-3-x-x. what other songs does he play that chord? just curious because this topic has been discussed countless times but I don't see the point.
I don't manage to play it with my pinky, the strings just don't ring. that's why i play it barre it with my ring finger. I think it's not possible to barre on an acoustic with the pinky...

you should definitely try to play it with your pinky, it will make it so much stronger. i started forcing myself to use the pinky for that shape about a year ago and my littlest digit is much stronger because of it

I totally agree with you, there's really nothing to be lost by trying to incorporate your pinky into songs, if anything else it will make you a better guitar player. I started trying to use my pinky for everything a while ago, and now that its so much stronger and more agile, I play much better. (lmao, that sounded like a line from some sort of pinky strenghener commercial)
