Martin HD28V headstock rattle fix?

hi all
I have an HD28V 2002 with very annoying headstock rattle. allegedly coming from the washers that are loosly fit under the tunerss.
I sent it to Martin, they say " we are just going to remove the washers, that will fix it , you will never know the washers are gone" end quote.

what is the purpose of these washers anyway if so loosely fit? they dont seem to keep the post from going through the drilled hole.
are they merely sosmetic and removing them will eliminate the rattle?
hmmmm

question, Is this an acceptable "fix" what if any other alternatives might there be?

the washers are there for a reason. if the washers need to be replaced (i dont know how a metal ring would go bad) then replace them. if its the tuner, then replace that.

the washers arn't "bad" they merely do not fit snuggly against the nut piece on the post

i know.. seems like a lame "fix"

It sounds like Martin is basically saying, "We're going to remove these useless pieces of plastic from the guitar that WE built". I'd email them with your concerns. I'm sure they know what they're doing. Customer service is supposed to be thier thing, isn't it?

there's no possible way Martin would ever accept a guitar at the factory to be fixed for loose tuner bushings...impossible. Unless you took it to a Martin Authorized Repair facility, which is different. Anyways, the bushings are press-fit which keep the tuning post in place, for lack of better technical description.

Here is the headstock on my DM3MD, whatever you do, dont tighten the bushings...you will strip the threads below (again, since they are press fit and rely on friction rather than threading)

no. i'm giving an example of the press fit bushings and why you SHOULD not be tightening them. if he wants them tightened, he should use some medium viscosity CA glue or titebond dabbed on with a toothpick or similar instrument. a pipette would work, too.

maybe i should have posted a picture of my HD-28V instead. :roll:

Shall I post a picture of my Gibson Chet SST then u moron? Although, they don't have pressure-fit bushings but what the hell, let's keep going while we're at it...Would a 1966 Brazilian Martin D-28 suffice? Or would an '01 Taylor 714 be in order? How about my 1972 Martin D12-20? Maybe even the lowly 1982 Yamaha CJ-818 SB would work, too?
