I want to plug my guitar straight into the computer, so I guess I can buy a 1/4 to 1/8 mono to mono reducer? and this should allow me to plug straight in? Does this work on every computer. I have a gateway if that makes any difference. Thanks

If you want to stick it right in the computer, be prepared to get the worse sound in your life. You need a pickup/acoustic mic and a preamp. Don't stick it in your mic jack, you will hurt your soundcard, I did with mine, then I realized how stupid I was. You need to put it in Line In.


You need a pre amp, and it's nice to have an external mixer (something simple, but I love my Eurorack), and then put that in the computer. That's how I do mine, and you will get a great sound you can fine tune, and get to sound right, and not a horrible sound putting it directly into the mic jack.

yeah definately use the "Line IN" jack. otherwise it should work and it doesn't sound nearly as bad as ranting tried to make it out. if you have an onboard preamp, or a recording program with an EQ you'll be fine.

if you only have a "MIC" jack, it tends to miss the lows. on my laptop that's all i have so even with a preamp and acoustic DI it still misses the lows, or bottoms out and gives really crackily bass.

hermm i just bought a cheapy comp microphone and a cheapy recording program.. i stuck the mic in the mic plug should i try the line in???

Hmm. My guitar w/o a preamp into my Mic jack gives perfect-quality sound and my sound card is not messed up.

Get a preamp for sure. I have heard few good things about Behringer though. The ART tube preamps are supposed to be good. The tube brings back some warmth that's lost in the digital process.

So I got it plugged straight into my computer and so far its working just fine. Sounds a lot better than the crappy mic that my computer came with. It did help to have a pre amp to do some eq-ing with.
