People arent touched by a great structural design. They remember a beautiful building. To me, Mayer seems to be writing music just for the sake of writing music. Theory-wise, its really sound, and actually impressive. There's no emotion behind what hes doing though, at least in my eyes. He's a musician, and not much of an artist.
Ben is an artist. He can take the most simple progression and make something beautiful out of it...the guy figuratively bleeds on stage. Mayer, in my opinion, has a lot to learn about being an artist, regardless of his knowledge of theory.
Oh, and Ben still has funk.
ok. I don't think you should say there's no passion behind Mayer's music. Listen to Heavier Things a few times and you'll hear it. Mayer has the most mature taste and knowledge of music for a young guy that I have ever heard. His passion is music and if you can't hear that through his playing, than you're not listening.
he kicks pretty much everyone's ass on the guitar.
i agree grave. i hate most of his music, but you can feel the emotion in his songs, no matter how sappy it is...
That may be true, but reread dustin's last post. It doesn't even compare. None of Mayer's songs can give you goosebumps just by listening to him sing. Just watch the bonus material on Pleasure and Pain of him playing "I Shall Not Walk Alone" with the Blind Boys of Alabama for example.
Now THAT is emotion.

i never said that he gave me goosebumps, more like painful convulsions...
and his voice sounds like he's smoked since the womb
I have to say harper because he puts his entire soul and every bit of emoition he has into his songs. ESPECIALLY LIVE! his live concerts. i love that reggae funk feel he puts in it. and just his songs are great. even though his vocal range isnt amazing, it still so fun to listen to!

I dont agree with you. I think its contrived. When I say there's no passion, I dont literally mean NO passion. If youre that good at guitar, of course there's some passion. But its weak man. Come on...listen to walk away, roses from my friends, hell, almost any of Ben's songs. Mayer isnt on that level as far as what drives him to ceate music. He is on a different level in regards to theory and putting together some damn cool chords/riffs...but that doesnt count as much in my book.

what does count in your book? how is the emotion you say harper has obtained?
