Elixirs......

Post by johnnyd »

Ah here I am bored at work. Anyway, I've noticed that several of you guys really like Elixir strings. I'm going to be doing some restringing this weekend and just wondered what you all liked about them compared with other brands. Do they help eliminate that squeaky sound that you get from sliding your fingers up and down the fretboard? If so I'll buy a case!!

Easy sliding, brilliant sound. I have a set of Nanoweb Elixirs that I'm dying to try out once I wear out my Polywebs. D'Addario's are also popular, but I've never tried them before.

Its alright if you have non-coated strings. The exp's you have really dont require it, as theyre coated. Fast fret does help remove the oil and other shit that builds up on non-coated strings, but I find that as long as I play with clean hands and wipe down the strings after use I dont really need the ff. I'd rather just change my strings anyway.

I've tried Elixirs and EXP's. I think the EXP's have a more powerful tone to them. but right now I'm poor and at college so I'm using cheap 5 dollar MArtin bronze peaces of shit. they'll do for now though.

Polys are more coated, which creates a less natural sound..

The diff between exps and elixers:

EXP's coat the wire, then wrap the string. So you dont really have a coating over the whole string, just the outer coil wire. If that makes sense.

Elixers are just standard strings that are then "dipped" into a coating.

I've tried both, and I think the tone is better on the EXPs. Thats just my opinion though. But really, I personally dislike coated strings, and think their tone is bleh. They last longer, but I never feel like I have new strings on when I put a fresh set on. They feel like week old uncoated strings to me.
