Help with No Rain by Blind Melon

I play the verse Emajor, Dmajor, Amajor, Emajor. It is a pretty straight forward syncopated rhythm, but there is a small chord change at the end of each verse that I'm having trouble nailing down. The guitar sounds something like dum da dum dah. Can anyone help me figure out the best way to play that?

All I can say is that my life is pretty plain

I like watching the puddles gather rain (dum da dum da)

Try a G chord in there.

G didn't work...and I think it is two chords anyway.

Are you playing an open G or a barre G? I cannot for the life of me get it to sound right...are you using upstrokes? Any help would be greatly appreciatd.

they were pushed into obscurity because shannon hoon, the lead singer, died. side note, they didnt even think no rain was that good of a song.
