picking /strumming help

so i dnot thin i described my question very well last ime. What i want to know is if it is poor form to keep your pinky stationd below the strings while either picking or strumming? When i see Dave play it looks like his whole hand is moving. i generally keep my pinky stationary and it helps to provide me with a referecne point when i need to pick out individual strings. Is this a bad habit?

yes it is. your "reference point" should be where your arm comes to rest on the sides of the guitar

Correct. It limits your movement, your dexerity and can ultimately bring problems.

I used to strum with my middle, ring, and pinky fingers stuck straight out, with only the fingers holding the pick tucked in, and then our resident Mr. Pat McInnis was kind enought to point out that it was bad form (according to his guitar teacher, I believe), you should keep your hold hand tucked in and not anchored on anything, and it will help with speed and control, and so I've been tryin' real hard to do so, and it's been a noticeable improvement in my strumming. So yeah, I'd try to keep those fingers tucked in, and just go from there. Good luck.

Your arm should be free and relaxed either for picking or strumming.
