this is basicly my stance

Tabs are great, and very useful, expecially for getting the right odd fingerings, BUT don't depend on them, it will hurt your music ability.

I really like the responeses I've gotten from this thread (most especially "thread of the year' and 'Ilove you") and it defintly gives me some hope for the future.

i relied on tabs heavily for quite a while. i started out with musical notation for about a year, then discovered tabs and i definitely regret getting into them. i feel so much more limited and marred now after using tabs than before. it'll be a while until i can recover fully, but i definitely know where you're coming from. i think one great benefit from trying to figure out a song by ear is that you develop your own way of playing it, regardless of whether it's different from them and that helps with the progression of being a guitarist and playing music because, in a way, you're making it yours by doing it your own way.

anyway, good topic.

wish i hadn't gotten shot by matthews, though.

sheesh. a man's gone for a couple of days and cheap shots are already being taken.

Style is something to be learned over a peroid of time. It's nothing that can really be taught.

i'd have to disagree more than agree. i've been involved in music almost as long as i can remember, played clairnet, snare, sax, and trumpet through all of my elementary years, and i excelled in music. i made all state all 4 years of high school, for concert and jazz, and even the new englands twice. point? i dont think i could have possibly learned how to play guitar without tabs. i have an "ear", as well as any musician and probably a bit better, but my ability to figure stuff out and improv on a guitar is, to me at least, 1000 times harder than on my trumpet. i've never taken a lesson in my life, and its a bitch to try to teach yourself all the notees on the fretboard and learn some theory. i know tabs do hinder, but thats how i learned how to play, and after learning how to play songs scrictly how they're written, i developed my own style, and i almost never follow a song exactly the way it's played now. my ear's getting better as i progress, but i dont think tabs are all that bad, i know they helped me. but it is gonna take time to get "un-used" to them, because i'd love to be able to pick up more by ear. anywho...

i would think with such a musical background, you'd have no problem reading music for the guitar. and i admire anyway who plays an instrument that requires you to blow air at a certain pitch

i only played piano for a year and a half, but it helped me immensely with the guitar

I don't have a problem with you using tab to learn to play the guitar, but I think for a large majority the same could have been done, without tab. It may have taken a lot longer, but it could still be done. I've been playing cello since 4th grade, and am a big strings guy. I come from a heavily musical backround, and I think this is what allows me to transition my knowlegdge of music between instruments with little difficulty. My only weakness is wind instruments. I am having my friend teach me oboe sometime (hopefully soon) and in exchange i plan to teach her guitar. But the whole point is I have a great respect for you, like Fatjack said, for playing wind instruments. I really wish I could play the saxophone. Chicks dig the saxophone.

That's mostly where my problem lies, is transfering what i know to guitar. And i think i'm having trouble because i learned how to play by tab, and not by reading music. i took on to wind insturments very quickly, but i've never played piano, which i think would help. and i can solo like nobodys business when i play jazz, but i dont have that same "freedom" with a guitar, because i dont think im familiar enough with it. i've been playing almost a year and a half, and i already overcame my friend who got me into playing, and i've been told i'm pretty damn good for how long i've been playing. i think that reguardless of how you learned how to play, knowing at least the nots on the fretboard helps tremendously - thats something i lack.

i also wanted to point on the reading music - i *tried* to play piano on several occasions, but i get all screwed because of all the notes on the page. same thing with guitar - reading trumpet music is obviously easier, but i think im intimidated at stacked notes or chords on a page of guitar music. but again, i think experiance and some theory would help with that.

i think im just rambling, but i've always wanted to touch on this issue....and i'd have to say chicks dig my guitar wwway more than a sax. and to anyone who wants to try a wind insturment, i'd give it a go. i started on clairnet, played sax, then switched to trumpet. i'v been playing almost 11 years, i've had fun with it the whole time. compared to guitar or piano its definently something new

that's basically what I am saying. The creation of very accesible tablature has made people not feel the reason to learn sheet music.

well, honestly, why do I need to learn sheet music? Sure it shows rythm. but don't you think tab actually helps you develop your rythm by making you listen to the song to figure it out? I feel no need to read sheet music. I just love playing guitar. Once you interject something that makes it a hard task, it's no longer fun. And I'll say it agian, I am not totally dependant on tab at all. Even though that is mainly how I leaned how to play.

Yeah, I need to learn me some theory and whatnot... As soon as I have time for an elective, I'm goin to pick up music theory for non-majors... Does that sound like a good idea? Also, there is a guitar class that I wanna take sometime soon as well... Anyone think it would be a good idea to take the two simultaneously?? I think it would be cool playin guitar all the time! Or, should I take theory first, then the guitar class, or what???
