it appears that the wood comes from tropical China. It is most often found in asian guitars as a back or sides and . asian drum sticks are often made from this. LINK http://www.soundwood.org/dspecies.php3?speciesID=96
ultimately you are just going to have to play it.
because it is used so often for back and sides, i'm going with hardwood, and conceivable any hardwood can make for a guitar top.
i think it is cheaper from what sites i've seen, so i am guessing lower quality but still it probably has a distinct sound similiar to koa that might cancel those worries out.

Ok the AD60CK and AF60CK are sooooo sick its not even funny. Both retailing about $450. They are solid and the electronics are sick as hell, theres also a built in tuner, the figured Dao wood is from China but sounds just like the Koa wood. I had my old teach and another dude that run a local shop play a Koa and a Figured Dao and I liked the Dao better. Just me but they are sick ass guitars. I'm going to buy an Alvarez just as soon as I have $400 for my amp

I can guarantee that those two guitars (the ones that are all-koa or all-dao) are all-laminate. Since the tops are figured as well, the tops are also laminate. Even if it were profitable for Alvarez to manufacture such a guitar and price it at $400 (which is highly unlikely), they wouldn't do it because it would undercut the sales of their truly higher-end models (Yari and the higher Alvarez models). I think these models are more for show than sound. But, one of my guitars is an all-laminate Takamine... and it has a pretty booming sound... good for campfires... so you never know until you try it out.
I bought the AD60K two days ago. I love it!! It's beautiful and sounds great. Alvarez stocks there guitars with Elixers, so it takes a little while to break the strings in and see what kind of bass will come out. I sold my buddy my Alvarez RD8BR and upgraded to the AD60K as my screw around guitar. I usually use my Tak A/E as my good recording guitar. My fiancee is buying me the guitar of my choice before our wedding, so I have until July to decide between the D-28, HD-28, or see if I can be swayed by a Taylor. My money (well hers) is on the D-28 at the moment. We shall see what the course of the next 8 months and many visits to guitar shops will have me strumming on.
