Rookie in the house...

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Rookie in the house...

Don't crucify me, but what are the numbers below the six strings in the tabs? Also, just a general musical question: How do you tell the key of a song??

thanks--

Welcome to the boards. Those numbers match up to the left hand fingers. so 1 is index, 2 is middle, 3 is ring, and 4 is pinky. word

Now you got me confused, those numbers below the e string are to tell you which finger to use on the note/chord above it.

When they're in parentheses, it's just for the slides, so treat it as normal.

Thanks for the help on the Tab GRock-

Now just break it down for me. In this song, the first number below is a 2, beneath 5 on the E. That means that I use the index to play the 5th fret, right? How bout immediately after when there is more than one note, and then the (3) beneath another group of notes. I'm sure it's simple, but it hasn't clicked yet...

Thanks for the patience

2 is the middle finger. so you just play the 5 on the E sting with your middle finger. the (3) just means use your ring finger to slide up to the 11. when the number is in parenthesis, that finger is used for slides. sometimes he has numbers after the tab pointing back to indicate what fingers you should use for other notes in a chord.

Each finger is give a number:

1 - index
2 - middle
3 - ring
4 - pinky

The numbers under the E string represent which finger you use on the frets. It can be very helpful when working on a song with tough fingering.
