You hear yourself through your jaw canal. It's not as deep as your normal voice. That's why you always sounds different on a recording than when you hear yourself talk. There is a mic in the earpiece. Kinda cool if you ask me.
That black pad on the ground in front of Dave's mic stand activates the main mic when he steps on it.
