I wouldn't say alpine spruce is better than red spruce, it's just different. To me, in the guitar world, woods aren't "better" than other woods but rather they excel depending on what style you play. Red spruce is very loud, and powerful with a punchy bass. Alpine isn't quite as dense. To my ear alone, alpine seems like a hybrid b/w sitka and engelmann spruce. It can take a bit of strumming but it has a real warm overtoney feel to it.
One thing I know about this guitar is that it cuts through a musical mess like no other guitar I've owned and it's just an easy guitar to play. Martin's low profile neck feels absolutley awesome.
I owned a D-18GE for about a month and foolishly sold it. Those things are awesome! I have a D-28 Marquis as well but sometimes I just wish I had that Mahogany dread to turn to.
