This is good that they are heading into the studio with some material already in mind...am I correct that they did *not* do this for the Stand Up recording sessions?

Not even with the whole band at the same time either...Batson had them all come seperate and play their ideas and they made songs out of that. American Baby was made just from Boyd plucking around on his violin and they made a song around it.
