Middle Eastern Music

Post by sozekizer »

I've suddenly in the last few weeks gained a pretty strong interest in Middle Eastern music mostly brought on by a coworker of mine who plays and rebuilds/restores ouds. Knowing that the majority of oud-played music cannot be easily reproduced on a guitar, i'm wondering if anyone knows of any tutorials to show how to play middle eastern music (theory, etc) on guitars.

thanks for the help.

Do you plan on using semitones?

Alot of music that is played on guitar to sound middle eastern uses the melodic minor scale. I think it is a raised 6th and 7th, but I am not 100% on that, I haven't used it in ages.

if you are just looking for scales this could help

http://www.jguitar.com/scalelisting?scale=Arabian

here is a total list, you could fool around with all of them if youd like. as far as the theory behind them goes, im not to sure you would have to ask someone else.

thats correct on the melodic minor in relation to natural minor. but i was thinking that middle eastern music uses more harmonic minor? with just the raised 7, the 6 is a normal natural minor 6. it creates a 1 and a half step between 6 and 7 that has a very distinct sound
