i was wondering...

Post by audmb »

I know that during the tours, especially the summer tours, the guys are playing concerts every day. So when do they find time to practice? I know that most of the older songs they have played so much they probly dont have to practice, but i know that they have to practice the different jams that they come up with for those songs. This is just a thought i had and wanted to bring it here. Maybe i dont know anything and everyone knows this, but as a musician, i know that if a group never has quality time to hammer out some rough spots in the music the bands timing and all can get off.

well, as they are playing shows everyday, they are practicing everyday. By the end of tours, bands (in general, not just DMB) become much precise/'tighter' musically.

I bet that they develop many of those jams either in the studio, during soundchecks, or on the tour bus.

DMBtabs, welcome to it.

i heard at some point that over this past summer tour that they practiced something crazy like 3 hours before every show or something. that's where they apparently came up with a lot of material they might use for the next album.

forget where i heard that, probobly on here somewhere. can anyone expand on that?

wow, how cool would it be if someone could record one of those practice sessions, you would be able to hear how they practice and come up with their music.

DMB's "jams" do not vary from show to show, which really sucks, but it doesnt call for much practice.

what I thought was cool was that Joyride was originally a soundcheck tune that LeRoi and Boyd would play during a soundcheck around 1999 or 2000

The soundchecks are as loud as they would be playing during the show. So if the venue allows you to be close enough before the show starts it's pretty easy to hear. I remember one time at Darien Lake the security guards weren't around so people were actually watching the sound check through the gates.

when you camp out at deer creek you can hear the soundchecks. i was there for a 3 night stint for phish and two of the days before the show mike and trey came out to the campground in golf carts. it was pretty cool

Good bands can improvise when they all know their parts perfectly, so you know what's coming and where you can go. It's a misnomer that DMB or any band just fucks around and creates magic out of nothing.

Back to DMB, much like any other band, the soundchecks are when they try new material, alter songs, etc.

It's the Lillywhite Sessions lol.

I kid I kid.

Even the LWS, think about it, if it was my music and it wasn't "done" or "perfect" and it was spread around I'd feel a little odd about that. It's the same thing if someone is watching you when you're not "on" or giving a performance and just practicing, soundchecking. Hey, that just might be me only whom feels that way.

but a band like dmb, or phish, whos been together so long and know each other musically so well, they have a certain chemistry thatyou dont have between just any 5 guys. they can do certain things without practicing exactly what to do

Its a lilttle diffferent. DMB's songs stay the same and folllow the same musical structure night after night.

Phish's jams will diverge from the original song. Look at songs like Reba and YEM. After the structured part, you never know where they could go.

Its easier for band like DMB who knows where the song is going

yeah i agree, but i was emphasizing the fact that the dmb guys know each other so well that they dont have to sort thru what to play next, it just comes. though phish is definately different cuz they might do one thing monday night and do a completely different thing tuesday, dmb still has a chemistry that i put in a similar category.
