In my opinion one should always own the best possible instrument they can afford- it will make you want to play more, having a good instrument to play with. Not to mention you will be able to play some things infinitley better on a Modulus, Zon, Warwick, KSD, any high end builder for that matter, then on a mexican fender clone.
If it fosters a better learning environment and sounds better, why not? They are instruments, not pieces of art- although they may look like pieces of art, they play amazing and that is what counts. So I don't think you should feel bad to own a high end piece of gear. Experience shouldn't dictate what you own IMO.
