How important is proper technique on Billies?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

On tripping billies durning the "intro", did anybody out there have troube learning to play it with four fingers? Before I found this website I used to play it with just fingers one and two. The only reason i can see to play it with all four is for the speed factor, I see that it goes a lot faster and flows better when you play it the way Dave does. I find if very hard to keep finger four under control when I slide (especially during the chorus). Did anyone else out there have that problem, or is it just something that comes with practice?

YOu got it dude. comes with practice. i had the same thing. just keep doin it and watch how that fourth starts to stick!

tripping billies is one of the most technical guitar songs that dave has written. i didn't get that song down perfectly, shit i still find myself practicing the verse to that song. like its been said, it just takes a lot of practice, practice, practice. especially the verse. you more have to feel the songs rhythm with your mind and hands and just let yourself flow rather than studying a tab or video. once i figured out that all of dave's song have a seriously cool flow to them, that's when i really started to get his songs down.

i still play the chorus bit of tripping billies with 1 and 3. i just slide those fingers around. i really never thought of alternating like dave does, but i got so used to doing it the way i do i really dont see a point in changing.

I also started to play the whole thing with my 1 and 2 finger. But a friend of mine said I'd be better to try it like Dave does it. First I always had problems with hittin the 4th sting with my pinky. But after a time I managed it quite well and then the slide in the chorus... It's absolutly normal that you're not gonna make it the first couple of times, but carry on and don't give up. A month ago, I thought I would never manage The Stone but today I play and sing it without any problems. Do always these things you got probs with and you're gonna get really really good and very talented, too.....I hope that helps.

I personally use my thumb for some of the chords:

fingerings: (T is thumb, m is mute, 1 is pointer, etc...)

Forget what the classical guitarists say, the thumb is a very useful finger!

as ticos way does sound ok, I would not take his advice as it doesnt really sound like the song at all...but it "is" his own version though, which is good too!

whoa man..chill out...all I was implying was that this guy should look at kanters video and tab for advice, because although yours is good, it doesnt sound like the song really...wouldnt you agree? i mean...it's "your version" anyway...

i'll say it again. how you FINGER it has NOTHING to do with how the song sounds. i don't see how you can argue otherwise.

oh, my bad...i didnt read the post correctly...I thought you were teaching him how to play "your version" of trippin billies...although, your statement is true, I dont think I'm alone when I say that to play it Dave's way is the easiest and sounds the best...late
