Tab sites legal problem

Post by natedawg »

Does this article have any impact on this site? I know mxtabs dissappeared as soon as it was published.

I would think that as long as you aren't using a copyrighted version of a tab book you would be alright. I also think sites like this that don't do a note for note tab but rather just give you the basic outline for the song would be safe.

I'm not really an expert in this area. Good question.

I dont see how posting tabs that are a person's interpretation of a song can be illegal. It's their work not the artist's.

I agree with this. Most tabs just provide an outline for the song, or an alternative way to play a piece. That is where creativity in musicianship resides. This creates a slippery slope problem. If tabs are illegal, I think they could then argue that anyone that makes their own recording of a copyrighted song is illegal, and people record their own renditions all the time.

That's ridiculous. Once someone releases a song, it's not their song anymore. That's why its not illegal to perform a cover of a song in a live setting. Or are they going to try to outlaw that too?

If someone has the ability to tab something out by ear, and feels compelled to share what they play with others, I see no reason why not.

OH!

And what about the people that don't put lyrics in their album cover booklets? Why give lyric websites crap? It's not like they do anything that takes away from CD purchases.

I do not support the music industry at all. They suck.

Me neither. I will hardly ever buy a cd anymore. Fuck that. All they're doing is getting this bad rep and pushing people away even more

I never thought it would come to this. It seems like the music industry is thrashing around looking for something to blame for their losses. Tab sites? This is absurd.

I wouldnt' be surprised if they would ... There's a big business of doing covers ... I know guys that make $400/night (two guys) doing covers.

Wow, I'm gonna have to start dumping tabs to my hard drive before the whole internet collapses. This is stupid.

I'm no lawyer, but I'm very confident in saying that there is nothing at all illegal about a tablature website (like this one). the music industry is grasping at straws, i hate them.
