He adds a ton of energy to the live show, but as far as adding any kind of musical contribution or complementing the members of the band, Timmy or Bela would be much better. Just listen to Bayou at Red Rocks. Its fun to watch for sure, but if you actually listen to the song he adds nothing musically. Its just him rocking out playing jumbled notes that, in all honestly, don't sound very good. Maybe he will be different in the studio, but if they are going to bring any guests in then they should bring in Tim, Bela or even Rashawn before Randolph since they are able to add something that actually makes the band sound better.
Won't Tim be on the album anyway?

Some of the earlier LB's were much better than the later ones Randolph wise. More melodic and less distorted noise. I heard the first RR Bayou all tour and it was great.

i haven't heard enough of RR to make a fair judgement - but guests in the past have done a great job - bela and alanis on spoon, timmy on everything decent - in the past DMB has guest parts be big enough to appreciate but small enough to still showcase the band and not the guest - i think thats the only acceptible 'format' if they bring more guests in the future

i know youve said you dont like Dave and Tim together but there is no denying the greatness that Tim adds to the full band in UTTAD, Crash and BTCS, his fills and mirroring of Dave's parts is outstanding.

Probably not, tim has become a novelty act with the band these days.

Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

The new Rolling Stone says that DMB will be going into the studio in January with Steve Lillywhite. Some of the guests are Bela Fleck, Tim Reynolds, and Robert Randolph
