it's funny, my brother tried to get me to play guitar for a couple of years, he even bought me one. two years go by and the only action my guitar got was settling dust. then i met this girl and she liked dave matthews (i was indifferent, as all i had heard was the radio stuff and wasn't real impressed). she nonchalantly played a dave cd and i shrugged my shoulders, then two step came on...the rest is...

Yeah, sometimes I wonder if there are a lot of people learning guitar just for the sake of playing Dave's stuff...we are freaks lol, but damn, the songs that guy writes are amazing and are totally worth the effort. Also since I started playing guitar eventho I only did it to play Dave's songs I've also started playing many other artists like Howie Day and Ari Hest and GooGoo Dolls...so I owe Dave a HUGE thanks for giving me the passion to pick up the guitar..and actually buy one for his songs because now I dont only play Dave and my passion for the instrument is still growing.
What I want is what I've not got, but what I need is all around me.

I started to play dave stuff, only played dave stuff, started to play other stuff (clapton, mayer, jazz and blues), proceded to get sick of everything basically except working on my own stuff.

when you first start out, you may think that all you want to learn is Dave songs, but you get to a point where you are getting better at playing, and your ear gets better and you start hearing songs by other artists that you like and different kinds of music that you like, and you'll want to learn them. you'll experiment with alternate tunings, you'll learn songs for a day and then forget about them, but it's a lifelong learning process, the guitar is, and I'm sure that eventually you'll know more than just Dave songs. however, the Dave songs that are out there now are enough to occupy a beginner for a number of years. :)

wow, some single songs took me a few months to learn. but "learn" is a loose term. its easy to remember what chords to play, but its the learning the rhthm and everything that goes along with making the song sound good. and more time to learn to sing them while playing. It really takes years to master them all.

the only one's that I really had problems with were the stone, tripping billies, what would you say, and ants marching...the rest I was able to pick up quickly...I could play along with any dave song w/in six months of playing...I never had a problem with strumming as some beginning guitarists did...it always came naturally to me for some reason...but yeah, it was kinda cool because these guys in stores couldn't believe I'd only been playing for x months and wanted to give me free lessons and stuff. the guy who sold me my taylor was shocked when I came back and played 4 months later. it was weird...seriously...

HA HA, I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY GEEK! yes, i learned guitar only to play Dave. that is ALL i play, nothing else really. In fact, i think i'm an even bigger geek, because i started playig guitar just to learn to play Lie in Our Graves. Now i play all of his songs, but LIOG is what inspired me to take it up. Nice to hear i'm not the only one
