ATTENTION:Vocalists

Post by jellyfish »

I have been working on my vocals for the past few months and was wondering if anybody has ever used a guitar tuner to accompany their practicing. Can a guitar be used to help with vocal training?

If so.... Can you tell me your methods?

I'm guessing I wont get too much response but any help will do.

Thanks,

J-

im assuming that the frequency of the human voice is different than that of a guitar so a guitar tuner wont be able to pick most of your notes up......

NOTE - IM NOT POSITIVE ABOUT THIS SO DONT TRUST MY WORD

no i don't think that's it. 440 should always be 440 if i'm not mistaken. i've never used a tuner for help though. my voice fluctuates so much i wouldn't be able to keep it on a note anyway. that's why i use so much vibrato...i'm actually cheating :) i GUESS it could be done but it seems like a real pain in the ass.

i've used my guitar before to find harmonies. play the 5th and match it and if you've ever had experience in writing harmonies, once you get the first note most of the time you can follow along pretty easily.

anyway, good luck w/ that, seems like a pretty hard damn task if not an impossible one. i would definetly go w/ the guitar before going w/ the tuner though.

Thanks Mitch. it is hard to keep the note in the green when singing. My voice is all over the fucking place. I can sing in 4 different styles but I'm not sure which one is correct.

The one that comes out naturally is the correct one.

That's easier said that done. :)

The book I have [by Roger Love] says to sing in your normal voice but I have problems ending some words when singing. It becomes unnatural at that point. It's as if I cant hold the note... How is that overcome? That really is my problem, not being able a finish verses [or the last word in the verse].

Not really sure what you mean. Are you running out of breathe? A recording might help.

No, I'm not running out of air. I try and regulate my breathing as much as possible. It just seems like I can sing

For example,

If Im singing Everythinhg by Lifehouse,

Find me Here,
and speak to me.

I have problems with the Here & Me. It doesn't saty in the same key as the first words that are sung.

I dont have that song to listen to so it's kinda hard to picture. Are find and here the same notes? Or are they just in the same key?

Anyway, it sounds like you're psyching yourself out before you even get to the notes. Just try relax and make sure you're loose.
