Question about stone, fool to think, satellite strumming

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Question about stone, fool to think, satellite strumming

Post by cgalves »

I've been aware that sattelite, fool to think, and the stone are all songs that Dave plays by muting any unfretted strings and strumming it ... but unfortunatley, I'm not at the skill level to do this ... not for a while. My question is, how many of us DMB followers play it "like Dave" ? IF you can play it by strumming, "equally timed downstrokes," as in sattelite and the stone, how long did it take you to master that >?

i would say that im at a combination of the two right now... i still pick them but my strumming motion keeps getting larger and larger as i get better- i guess practice makes perfect

i play each by only hitting the strings i need to hit. if you ask me, muting while important, isn't as important as accuracy.

i alternate pick (or whatever its called) on the verses of both sat. and stone.

the only exceptions are the choruses of both. but the muting on those is easy, you just have to lay your hand down and there isn't much moving.

and i don't know how to play fool to think, cause i hate that song.

I wanna make sure I have this right: dave strums the verses on the stone? Or do you mean he just strums the chorus? Those're two very different things...dont know how the hell anyone could strum those single notes (in stone or satellite)...
on the charlie rose version of stone (only one I have on video) hes definitely picking, thats all I know

dave basically does down strokes across most of the strings on stone verses, except the fast lick. but he is able to mute everything else. its beyond me really. i can't even try it w/o it sounding like a sick calf in a hail storm (don't you love my barnyard similies) so yea, my advice is to work on accuracy instead. if you wanna see a good video of it, there's one on blazaa that has him doing some solo thing for a radio station. its great for lookin.

yes he strums, but it is a very controlled strum, he only hits about two to three strings at a time, and i honestly think that this is by accident. he strums strums around the string he is meaning to play, and the muting jush kinda comes from "accidentally" hitting the strings.

strumming all six strings is the dumbest thing you could possibly do while playing this song
