Help - How to mute in Stay?

Post by terranasor »

Hey all,
I'm having trouble muting the the E & A strings in Stay. How is it supposed to be done? Are my 2nd & 3rd fingers supposed to be involved? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

yes. basically you want to hold the chords w/ your 1st and 4th and lay your 2nd and 3rd on the e and a strings. it takes some practice, but once you get it, you'll wonder why you couldn't get it in the first place. just make sure you don't hold down the e and a so hard that you accidentally hit a note. but yea, just mute them w/ your 2nd and 3rd.

Awesome. Thanks a lot!
By the way, I love the Brian pic. I'm just going through the Season 3 DVDs... fantastic. :)

What does BTW mean? I always wondered that.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

I hold the strings down with 4 and 2, and mute behind 2 with finger 1, then when you go from 10->8 in the first part of the intro, you can take off 4 and put 2 and 3 on eight...did that make any sense?

The 2nd and 3rd finger rest on top of the E and A string while the 1st and 4th finger hold down the D and G strings. I use my 1st finger to hold down the D string and mute all the strings below it while I play the intro/verse.

I could not play Stay for the longest time because of the muting problem, but when i picked up my guitar earlier this month, the muting hand position just came naturally. I guess it all comes down to experience and getting all of the tension out of your hand which newer dave-like players might have...

i know i did....

have tension.....

in my hand....

I'm going to end this......

now.
