Help with Crash for a newbie

I just started playing guitar etc...etc...
I was told Crash is a good starting song so I started there. The part I cannot quite get is the strumming. It sounds like when Dave strums each of the chords he strums somthing else before he gets to the next chord. Is this just TIm I am hearing, or am I not strumming right. I watched the video and it seems like I hear it there to. Is there a special strumming method I am to use hear?
