Dave's money.

Post by Thomas »

this might be a weird topic and could turn bad but this was always something that i've wondered.

i've seen a few documentaries and read a lot of articles about Dave and a lot of times it comes up that he is one of the richest rockstars in america. I always thought this was wierd because while he is popular, he certainly isn't one of the MOST popular so why would he one of the richest rockstars?

i would guess because he is not as much of a rock star in lifestyle. he doesnt have week long parties renting out the top floor of suits at a first class hotel. he doesnt have an absurd house, or a gold toliet, or a pool with rubies in it. in the SU video, he drives a subaru outback to the studio...not exactly an expensive car. hes very down to earth....thats my guess

he also makes money off of the clothing and stickers and stuff. most artists make more money off of clothing than they do album sales.

I willing to bet that a bulk of it is from touring. Commerce second. Albums third. Farming way, way, way last.

Maybe he'll come up with an equivalent to Paul Newman salad dressing.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away

Touring is definitely how they make their money. Im not sure of the exact percentage DMB gets when they sell an individual CD but it's not very much. I would guess DMB sees under $2.00 per Cd sold.

this is from an article in "Food & Wine" magazine that was posted here a few weeks ago...
Since then, Matthews has put a chunk of money—his earnings have been estimated to be more than $20 million a year—into buying 1,260 acres of farmland near his Charlottesville home and slowly restoring it to meet organic growing standards. He purchased the land simply to keep it from developers. He says the notion of a more active stewardship grew from three things: his upbringing, some enlightenment by Willie Nelson and friends, and the naturopathic studies of his wife, Ashley
