I did the same thing not too long ago, I hated it. And this was the second string i had broken in like 2 months, so since it is a new guitar I decided it had cruddy strings so I restrang all the strings with elixer lights, and I must say I'm very impressed. But thats slightly off topic.....

Bah. My guitar's a POS.. Maybe not a POS but cheap.

Anyhow, the only string I've ever broken is my high E, which I've broke 2 0r 3 times. I always try to find songs that don't use it, so i can play until I get the time to get new strings.

playing without a string on guitar won't mess it up or anything. you could put just on string on there if you really wanted to. i know several 12 string artists that remove the octave E on the low E string and even have new nut's installed so the have 11 string guitars.

there si som chance that you can start to bend the neck if like all you have is the low E string on there. but really short of leaving your guitar in a hot car like that, it won't cause problems.

it's just like taking off the strings when changing them. it ain't no big deal.

but i would much rather just mute a string than remove it completely.

i once saw a music video for matchbox 20 (i think)
and rob tomas was using an electric with a missing string
i think it was cause he couldnt handle muting it

and it was also a guitar that he smashed on the stage and had the top half of the body missing
