More than one guitar?

Okay now i've been playing for roughly a year now, and i play more than any normal human should. But i learn quickly and i've really got a hang of it. I can play many songs all the way through, most very well, some not as but still good. But i've been wondering If or when i should get another guitar. I don't think now is a good time, i think its way too early. But i've been noticing that some of you have maybe two acoustic guitars. MY question is, what's the point in that? I mean, you can only play one at a time right? unless you're reeeeaaalllly hardcore.

So anyways, if there is a point that i'm not aware of, when is a good time to get another one. I could honestly get another one soon cause my birthday is in a month..... yea! so any help is awesome.

it depends on you man, just get what you want

i have three guitars, but they are of different types: a six string acoustic, a twelve string acoustic, and an electric. if you get another guitar, consider getting a different type.

you may just wanna upgrade instead of just buying a second guitar

ohhh theres always room for another guitar 8)

i have 4 now and i just sort of keep accumulating them

i have one regular acoustic (w/ pickup)
one B acoustic
my telecaster
and a gibson explorer copy taht my uncle gave me

so really... there is no need for having multiple guitars, but it cant hurt

I didn't even have my own guitar until I'd been playing for about 1 1/2 years. Had to use my dad's Guild.

i had a crappy 90 dollar yamaha classical for about 4 years, then felt it was time to upgrade to my Taylor 414. i haven't gone back since.

i had an electric for a while, but it just didn't fit me. really, it's personal preference. the reason i have 2 guitars now is that it's nice to have around my old busted up thing just to see what i learn on, though of course, my Taylor's my main axe. each guitar has it's own sorta sound...and maybe you'd just like to do some recordings with different guitars. some people have various guitars for the sake of having more than one guitar, which i find useless.

it's up to you, though.

i don't think i'll have a need for another guitar for quite a while, unless something happens to my Taylor *knocks on it's beautiful rosewood*, but other than that, i'm just buying up stuff to do recording, etc.

by the way, i found a drummer and we're practicing tomorrow! whoo! random note.

Well i'm using my brother mitchell. its about 13 years old or so but its still in good shape. Now fatjack, my question is, is a twelve string for practical? I mean i know there are songs like hotel california and select dave songs that sound fantastic on twelve strings, but what else can you use it for? I know almost nothing about them, so i'm not ridiculing. I would love a twelve string, but i don't know if its worth the money to get something that i only use once ina while....

I'm thinking that when i'm ready to get a guitar, its gonna be a nice taylor. (yea i'm a taylor guy) just a nice 6 string acoustic taylor possibly with pickups but whatever. I'm not doing gigs right now or anyhting... But I have that urge to get another guitar so bad! but then i think to myself, what's the point. You got one sitting right there in front of you..... ah! i'm so distraught.

hah. i'd go for something you'd be satisfied with for a while. think long-term. i shelled out a little more for the limited Taylor, and i don't regret it one bit.

i didn't say you had to get a 12, i was just using it as an example of the different types you can have.

i use it for recording purposes and to play at church with it sometimes

i think the smartest thing to do when you get good is to have a good expensive acoustic and a good expensive electric. then keep your old pos acoustic for traveling and beach trips and such. i would never take my martin to the shore or the mountains or anything, that's for performing and recording and general playing in my room.

Well, I have 3 acoustics, 2 electrics, and a mandolin. The reason why I have 3 acoustics. The fender is my first guitar, and a steel stringed. The second is my mom's classical from the 60s. Classical is a much warmer sound, and a gentler sound than a folk. Then the third is my Martin Backpacker, it's a travel guitar, cheap, small, and sounds fine, so I can take a guitar and not panic if something happens to it.

Now, electrics. The first is my second guitar, it's a jazz guitar, so it's got a real smooth and clean sound. The next is my Les Paul, that is VERY high quality, and has a good clean and strong sound. It can also go the other way, and gt the hardest, grungiest sound, but it can't get the warm smoothness of the jazz. Then, the mandolin, it's a mandolin, a guitar can't sound like one.

Last, I want another acoustic. Why? I have a fender acoustic, not the best quality, and not the greatest performing guitar.

Eaceh guitar has different qualities, and so different sounds and feels. One guitar will only give you one sound, and one feel.

i have 3 guitars. my six string, my twelver and a ibanez daytripper tuned up a fourth to A. thay all have very distinct sounds and distinct feels to them.

my six is just a nice ibanez. i got a huge discount on it and it was my first guitar. i have a lot of history with it. i really want to upgrade but so much emotion... ha

the 12 i got for practically nothing but it can add a lot to songs and move them around. riffs sound completely different cuz of those octave strings. you really have to spend some time and explore these things cuz they are like completely other instruments than a guitar.

and the high tuned daytripper is 3/4 dreadnought so i look big and muscular when i play it. it also gets a lot less feedback and is easy to finger difficult chord shapes. it has a nearly standard scale length but tuning up it plays like capo 5 so i can solo and play notes 5 pitches higher. i can also fit it in a back pack (with the neck sticking out) with room for clothes and camping stuff.

it's also good cuz at any one time i'll have at least one of them in an open tuning to play slide.

but i write all my music on my standard 6 string. and then move it to one of the other guitars. i have several songs that are really guitar specific now.

hope this helps some. really there is no need for another guitar but they are all fun to have.

I think for recording/performing artists the benefits of having multiple guitars is clear. Different sounds, also if you do different open tunings, you don't want to be having to tune your guitar between every song.

12 strings are great if your jamming with friends or just by yourself. Certain songs don't sound good but a lot of dave songs sound real cool on a 12. They are expensive but if your a serious enough guitar player and like dave's genre of music then it's worth it.
