bassman, try doing it without looking at a tab. tap the chordal stuff up high, you know? make it sound full. just keep pecking at it, a few measures a day maybe.

ill try, but it wont go very far. my ear is terrible still at the moment. im lucky if im able to figure anything out. the only thing ive figured out is a bass intro my mentor does into amazing grace. and thats only because he uses a common harmonics chord form.

well if you think your ear is bad, thats what you should work on. it wont get better by usin tabs. oh and if your ear sucks then it doesnt make a difference how many chili pepper songs you know, or how much vic/jaco you can play, because you wont be able to play (well) with anyone.

i still think that by far the best way to get better is to play with other (preferably better) people

one of the big reasons my brother and i are working on making this room im in a music room. so we can do alot more jamming.

just start learning things by ear. try easy things where the bass stands out alot.

Good thread, slumps are common for all instruments and a lot of ways to get out of them can be consistant.

From a personal point of view being a drummer, I slump now and then and to get out I watch a lot of video on drum greats, try to do some of their fills and try to build upon some of their great beats. Gets me in the mood to get behind the kit and mess around.

I play only by ear, but learning notation can greatly improve my mental part of playing.

I thought the suggestion of learning stuff you dont normally listen to is a great idea, jazz, orchestral works, even country have inspired me.

And when i get to some I cant play, I slow it down, way down, figure out the pattern and strokes, from there I can speed it up faster and faster to any tempo. Vary on the tempo really changes a song and shakes things up

Drums are a little easier to get out of a slump too, because we can add to our kit and play with new toys

I recently got bongos and jazz brushes, I want to play all the time now
