i don't know, but a lot of bands do it this way. aerosmith goes into seperate rooms and just plays the song and when it's over the dub over the mistakes. i don't know if dmb has ever done it, but it would be the best way to get more jam out. i mean they have to face it, they are a jam band that happens to have good lyrics too. they need to embrace that and stop w/ this song starts here song stops here stuff. that's why they're one of the highest selling live bands, they're good at jamming. do it in the studio, it doesn't have to be 20 min long, but give the fans what they want. and that isn't a 3 min song.

I remember in an interview that Dave did a little while back he mentioned how much different the recording process was for SU than all their previous work. He said that on previous records they would try and capture what they did live and put an extreme polish on it, so it would be in essence a perfect capture of a live performance. Vocals wise though Dave doesn't sing when they record the music for each song, that is always done seperately.
yea i forgot to add that. that's a very wise idea.

I would think carter and leroi would F up eachother's sound if they all recorded in one room.

Yeah they don't record in the same room. If you remember the Stand Up videos from the website you could see that each band member had their own room set up to record.

Did they play together via headphones or was each instrument individually recorded?

They had monitors in each room so they could see and speak to each other as they played. However according to interviews a lot of SU was pieced together. Like for AB Boyd came in and laid down his part then Dave came in and put some chords around it, then at the end I think they all played together on it, so it seems like they did a little of both.

Their albums of late all sound like they were thrown together in a couple weeks...which they were. Great records take time to make. Not this "make a whole new song in a day" bullshit.
