a) It's free.
b) EVERY PLAYER AVAILABLE except for Windows Media plays .m4a files. Winamp, VLC, RealPlayer, foobar, QCD, amarok, iTunes...
c) m4a (MPEG4) is a completely open standard authorized by the Motion Picture Experts Group to supersede MPEG3 (mp3), because it's a far superior format. Apple developed some of the technology, as did Dolby, and Apple released every part of it to an open standards body, making it available for use by anyone.
d) Compare that to Windows Media's format (wma), which they are trying to force people to use by not supporting actual standardized audio formats. It only works in Windows Media, its compression system is far lossier, and the entire format is proprietary. No one can use the format unless they license it from Microsoft.

WMA v3? (The latest version, codenamed Janus - barely anyone uses it, but it's still only supported by licensed players. Maybe Winamp is licensed, not sure.)

Right, but that's the format that Microsoft is pushing, which is what I was talking about. That wasn't even my main point... that post was rife with complete misinformation regarding MP4, and I was correcting them.
