I hate to sound anti-DMB, but I would have to say I don't care much for Stefan. His solos absolutely suck...he ruined Watchtower at CP. Granted, he sounds very good WITH the band, but that's where he should stay. His solos just don't work...minus the crush intro...but that's hardly a solo. For some reason, I've always just got the vibe that he was the odd-ball of the group...he always wants the band to go to a more "pop" mainstream way. The cover of Stand Up is a great example...it looks like a frickin Jay-Z album cover!!!

What does the cover have to do with anything. Although they say Stefan collaborated with an artist for the cover all it is in actuality is an updated version of an old Dave drawing so if any is to blame for the cover its Dave.

The cover is THE symbol that has represented the Dave Matthews Band for over 15 years... if that's not appropriate than I'm not sure what exactly is good enough for you.

And his solos suck? Ugh. Coming from a musician who actually plays guitar, bass, and piano, Stefan is one of the most musically-sound members of the band (I'd rate him #2 behind Carter).

agreed on the final point about him being second behind carter but tot eh firs point about him being the odd man out in the group. he is the bassist. generally bassists are the ones who fit in a little less than the rest

Actually, I wasn't referring to the firedancer...I was referring to the CHROME firedancer. C'mon, since when do we associate DMB with all black and some bling bling?! That's just the impression that I get when I see the album cover.

And as for his solos, and you being a musician...to each his/her own. I don't care how difficult his solos might be, (I can pull the musician card, too), I just don't like them. You can't honestly tell me that listening to his intro on CP (minus the star-spangled banner) that all that distortion and shit really sounded good. I was there right up front, and everyone around was looking at each other like "damn...he's messing this up." Even Dave was looking at him like..."?"

So anyway...yeah, Stefan can play, but I just don't like his solos.

I think Victor Wooten should be on hand to jump on stage for any bass solos...and then stefan can jump back in and play the regular parts.

I completely agree with crush40, the central park watchtower was destroyed because of fonzi and dave did look pissed, watch the dvd, and granted it was only one mistake, lets be honest, all of his baselines have stayed the same since day 1, not a lot of improv, and listen to his solos going all the way back in the early dmb days

Not a lot of improv??? I hear things that I have never heard before every time I see them live. If you really focus on Stefan, you'll hear what I mean. And I'd like to hear you do a better bass solo then him!
