Has this ever happened to anyone?

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

I've played dotless guitars, and they don't screw me up one bit, I know where every fret on the fretboard is, and if i don't, then i should be able to count them as I play anyway.. muscle memory is nice :)

Not to brag, cuz I have nothing to brag about, but I don't really think there is a need for inlays. Maybe to learn with, but you don't really need them to play with. I was playing for a few friends at about 2AM by a bonfire and I couldn't see shit but still managed to pull off The Stone and Just a Phase. BTW, I mean this when you are using your own instrument. I don't really think you can totally rely on "muscle memory" when playing a different guitar. Even the feel/action of the guitar can totally throw you off.

yeah. definitely i think every guitar has their own sort of feel, and you get used to the feel of yours, which is nice. sometimes the feel can be radically different, though, like from my 90 dollar nylon to my Taylor...

Fatjack....IM confused with your reply. I said a skilled guitarist shouldn't have to rely on dots to make him not screw up. You replied that you like your guitar cause it way it looks????

And have you ever played a Godin. The one I have doesn't have any inlays.

the looks part was just a little aside to the original post, perhaps i should have explained better

you may think you dont need any dots when you play, but try playing a guitar without then (if you can find one). i referred to my guitar because it has dots on the top of the neck where only the person who is playing it can see. i think that a guitarist needs AT LEAST that to be able to function, unless of course you play really simple songs that don't require any movement.

I play a fretless bass. Well it's not techically fretless because it has the fret markers, only they are inlayed into the neck, so you can't feel them. It's the best of both worlds. Fretless sound without wondering what the hell you're doing....do they even make fretless guitars, I don't think that would work all that well.

You get a really different sound out of a fretless. Much more laid back feeling.
