Mayer's "Why Georgia?" (help)

Post by TwoMuch »

Does anyone have a demo video of that bridge part in Why Georgia that goes something like this:

------------------------------------------------- r
-----3-----3-----------3-------3----------3---- e
-----4-----2-----------2-------2----------2h4-- p
-----2-----2h5p3-----2h5-----2--X---2--2---- e
--3-----3-----------3-------3-----X------------ a
-------------------------------------------------- t

I don't know if the tab is accurate because that part of the song is hard to follow anyway. A video of the main riff would be nice too since I don't know how to get that rhythmic thumb slap down.

If no one has any videos, any help would be appreciated.

Play it w/o the slaps first. Once your really comfortable with the song, they almost come naturally. This song isn't all that hard to play. For a video, check http://www.jmtabs.com

For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again

I don't think i'll ever get those damn slaps in the song to sound right. Everytime I try it sounds all f*cked up. Anyone willing to post a video of the strumming hand so I can be enlightened?

I kinda do what Mayer does...I kinda hold the pick w/ my middle finger bent...stuck in the groove...hard to explain. The first whole verse is like this until you hit the "Cause I wonder..." part. After that it's all strummed w/ a pick. The "Everybody is a stranger..." part can be fingerpicked also.

ok im looking at this tab. you guys said that only the intro is fingerpicked, but he also plays the intro during the verse. then he goes into verse 2, etc. now does he only fingerpick during intro/verse, or does he do it for intro and entire verse?

Just listen to the song...it's fingerpicked 'till the "Cause I wonder..." part. Download an acoustic version if you can!!!

Mayer is notorious for using the "phantom pick" technique. He holds the pick in his palm while playing finger picking/slapping parts. Not too difficult to master w a little practice. jmtabs has some videos. Claypigeons.net has tons of acoustic videos, including many mayer songs. Maybe this will help. Mayer does take time to master, but it will make you a much better guitarist if you learn alot of his songs. Georgia is actually one of the easiest songs he has.
