okay, i'll put it more simply
Don't try to put down someone's advice without actually being able to back it up. It's not enough to tell someone they are full of shit, you have to tell them why.
Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": "I once saw this in a movie, it was about a bus that had to keep it's "speed" above 50, and if it's "speed" dropped, it would explode...I think it was called "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down"!

thanks ya I thought of that too, actually... I'll prob pick one up tomorrow.
I realized today that the guitar I play on now is a bit thicker in the neck then my old one was. Not wider like classical guitars are, I mean from like top of the neck where the strings are to the bottom where its curved, from one type of wood to the other... if that makes sense.
Basically that means it takes more to get your hand around it then the other one did. Its by like a centimeter or two but its still thicker.
This may sound crazy...but depending on the type of pain, you might want to try taking some apple cider vinegar. Not the heinze brand but Braggs organic apple cider vinegar. I know some guys that are total health nuts who recommended it to me and it worked great. Yes it tastes terrible, but if it really hurts and you want to continue practicing it is worth a shot. Just add an ounce or two to a glass of warm water and drink it like a jager bomb. down the hatch. do this once a day. Within a few days you should notice some results one way or another. I practice alot...at least 4 hours aday and as many as possible when time alows. Guitar is my life, so I have had my fair share of aches and pains. but either way it is a great antioxident and really helps keep your joints moving. also it is great for a lot of other things like overall energy, weight loss, and a ton of other things. Check it out on the web there are tons of sites with information about it just google it. Hope this helps

Form is one the MOST important things to learn when learning to play guitar. I don't know what level you're at, but sometimes it's good to take a few lessons so you can master the very rudimentary elements of proper form as it's difficult to "unlearn" bad habits.

sounds like you might have a case of tendonitis or (tennis elbow).
I have the same thing right now.
my brother-in-law is a physical therapist and he said it's a direct result
of playing guitar.
you have to stretch and strengthen the surrounding muscles...
I'm feeling a lot better.
I'm not sure if you have the same thing but give it a shot.
yea... i was at my doctor but he said he doesnt really diagnose guitar related injuries very well but he said by taking a look at my arm (it's gotten worse and has come back lately), that its probably from just playing too much. No tenditous or carpal tunnel or anything like that, he said the muscles and stuff were inflamed and overused (i guess they can tell that by feeling your arm and asking if different places hurt when they press? i dont know im not a doctor).
I heard somewhere that lighter strings can help too. I'm not sure what kind but my alvarez when i got it about a month ago had elixirs on them but oddly the little booklet that came with it doesnt say what thickness they are. It could be that they are thicker then the strings I was use to playing too, which made it tougher on my arm to clamp down on the strings.
I guess I just have to take a break for a few weeks and let the muscles heal
edit: my doctor did recommend stretching the muscle out carefully before I play once it gets better though, and possibly strengthing it could help too he said but again he said he isnt too familiar with guitar-health stuff so it was more like general stuff with the arm and stress on the arm.
i probably do have improper technique. I can't think what else would give me all this pain. I will definately get some sort of lesson on technique. because i mean i still think i play too hard like i use my arm more then my fingers when i fret... and even though i think about not doing that when I play when i start jamming or something or going really fast I find myself doing it even more so.
what happens too is i think about not pressing too hard/using just my fingers so much that i start messing up the song cuz i cant just relax and play. I am worried about pressing too hard or not doing it right.
I imagine it will just take time. its a rut I got myself in and probably one of the downsides of being self taught. Cause back when I started I didn't look into anything about technique until months after, which would probably have already started to ingrain the habits.
