on the subject of playing solo i still likr taylors, but thats cuz the expressions sound soooooooo good, but even though im a taylor fanboy, kind of, the best guitar i ever played was a martin. (can't remember the model but it was amazing, iwas going to get it for my dad but someone bought it right after i left to make sure i had the funds).

A good guitarist can make even the shittiest of guitars sound good enough to listen to.

either way.. I only have the epiphone because it was dirt cheap and I wanted a guitar I could take around with me (vacations, to school, etc.)... just because i really don't care whether or not it gets smacked around.

the Squire was my first electric.. and being honest, it's not half bad on the neck pickup.... you get a little bit of buzz because of the grounding or whatever (they're cheap fender single coils.. ti's bound to happen) but you can get a pretty decent jazz or blues tone out of it w/ 11+ gauge strings (and on the neck pickup).
