The change in daves guitar play over the years...

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

That's what they thought he had at first. It's tendenitis that he actually has.

And personally I was never complaining. I actually LOVE this album. It's got a great GROOVE to it. Is it different? Yes, 100%...but in a good way. I don't really want the same old, same old with DMB anymore. I can barely listen to a Two Step song live now because it's the same EXACT song it was 7yrs ago at Listener Supported. CHANGE THINGS UP A LITTLE.

I believe I heard that this producer has done stuff with Dre and other non-band artists? If that's true, it shows. The rhythm beats on this album are the first thing that will stick out...very, very solid. This album is more about Carter and Stefan than most others.
Kanter, you really dig this album? Honestly, to me it sounds more like a mish mash of grooves and riffs and the songs really don't go anywhere.

To me, what made DMB so special was how, especially live, their songs would build and then release.

My tastes have changed musically, and DMB's have as well. Could I just be upset that we're  growing apart? Time will tell.

Peace,

C

Yes this album is not like R2T, UTTAD, or Crash but it's like NOTHING else out there right now. It's not all over-processed pop shit that is a waste of my time and money.

It just happens. Dave isn't 23 anymore. He doesn't hang out in college bars and fall in and out of love all the time anymore. The band is in a place in their lives where they are established and confident and as such they are long removed from the experiences that shaped their early music.

Personally, I'd find it trite and incredibly fake if they put out an album with lyrics like some of their early stuff.

Dave takes a bus or a limo everywhere now. I just don't think he's even going to have an experience like the one that led him to name his song, "Dancing Nancies" ...

Just my $.02 ... I love the new album.
actually he drives a subaru outback i believe. and he drives it to the studio. so...he doesnt take a limo or bus everywhere....and he drives golf carts too havent you seen the gorge video?

Most Dave songs got squat to do with being young and stupid. Seek Up etc are all ageless in that sense. Actually, Seek Up and Stand Up has got similar themes, only that Stand Up is much worse lyric-wise. :?
For all my posts, just add "I think" in the beginning and "in my opinion" in the end. Now shut up!

Do you think he's gonna write a song called, "Picking up Pampers at the Walmart"? ROFL!

I just meant that as a major celebrity, he unfortunately has to be isolated to a large extent from the masses lest he get mauled every time he went to the movies or something :)

True, but as a 20-something his reactions would probably be more visceral wouldn't they? He doesn't have an extra 14 years of world experience to jade him :)

The album has grown a bit on me since i first heard it. But i personally think its the furthest thing away from the band that is DMB thats ever been put out. All i hear about is how every great band has evolved over time. Their influences have changed and therefore so has their music, but i fell in love with a band that played their own sound and didnt mold it around something else. To me, theyre becoming more mainstream. Now maybe its too much to expect another Jimi Thing, Ants, Billies, or Graves, but the whole album seems like such a waste of their musicianship and talent. And i must admit...if i sat back and listened to the album never knowing a single thing about DMB, id like it. I konw its good music, i know it has potential, but i know its far too inferior for them, it just doesnt cut it IMO

Well put! I like this album but, like you said, it's definitely waaay inferior to what they have(had) to offer.
Regardless, I'm a huge fan and plan on being just that for some time.
Let's just wait and see what happens next. And cross our fingers that it's not produced by the same guy that did "Stand Up"
