Mahogany Wood

I have a
Taylor 314ce limited koa - spruce top with koa back and sides
Epiphone Hummingbird - spruce top with Mahogany back and sides
Martin D-15 - Mahogany top, back and sides

the Martin with the Mahogany top gets most of my attention...

if we're talking mahoghany of the saepele nature than its a different story... and to be fair you are comparing it to a koa and an epiphone

um my guitar has koa back and sides so watch it...

and always remeber on woods, the price has nothing to do with the quaility, its all about tone. rosewood is more expensivce because its rarer. so never look at price for quality.

oh koa is fine as a backwood and sidewood, but using it for a top is like building a cars engine out of gold... sure it looks pretty and its exspesive, but it just dont perform

I agree that most of the koa topped guitars don't really perform, but every once in a while you will hear one that is absolutely amazing. This was probably one of the best acoustics I've ever played....but at $4,800(used price!!) it better be-

Ive heard froggy bottom makes some TOP guitars. id love to compare that one to some other acoutics, cuz all the koa tops ive heard (3) were very trebbly and empty imo

yea that "emptieness" is what I ussauly hear from most of them too.

I'll take the pepsi challenge with a Spruce/Rosewood guitar any day. I'm still consistantly surprised by how good my D15 sounds. My only qualm is that it seriously lacks overtones which would be a big plus for the kind of things I play. Otherwise it sounds great and I'm rarely impressed by guitars costing 4X as much.

I'll take the pepsi challenge with a Spruce/Rosewood guitar any day. I'm still consistantly surprised by how good my D15 sounds. My only qualm is that it seriously lacks overtones which would be a big plus for the kind of things I play. Otherwise it sounds great and I'm rarely impressed by guitars costing 4X as much.

i think the best sounding guitars out there are larrivee 03s which come it from 700-1000 bucks... ive played handbuilt breedloves that cost 4 times that much and im not impressed

My larrivee OM-05 mahogony top guitar is one of the best sounding guitars that I have heard. I played it against many rosewoods, and liked the sounds better, but to each his own. I personally love the sound that I get out of it, and considering that I spent around 900 for it brand new. I'm not saying that there aren't better sounding guitars out there, but I personally think that the mahogony topped guitars that I have played sound great for the most part (larrivee OM -05, D-05, Martin D-15 all mahogony topped).

This may be strictly for Martins (though I would think wood is wood, and would sounds the same no matter the manufacturer), but their custom catalog pdf they list a buncha different types of woods available for sides and backs, and then tops, and what their tone are comparitively. There are two entries for Mahogany, figured and genuine...

Figured Mahogany:
Beautiful and rare (often quilted) variety of genuine mahogany occurs in a very small percentage of mahogany trees. Though difficult to bend, figured mahogany shares the same tonal properties of the unfigured mahogany.

Genuine Mahogany:
Much lighter in weight than rosewood, koa, or maple. Yields a surprisingly strong, loud sound with emphasis on clear, bright airy trebles.

you asked either me or bbatsell to explain the "said sigh" so i did. i just don't see hwo you could say that mahogony tops are bad, but as i said when i felt inclined to explain the said sigh, we all have opinions. You just hadn't bothered to explain yours (unless i missed it). no problem, don't get your panties in a bunch.

my panties are plenty aligned. ussually someone sighs when like some newb starts a thread like "does someone have a tab for crash into me?" ive only played 2 or 3 mahoghany tops and in my opinion they're way too bassy and smuggly, not enough resonance.

im all for opinions man.
