Most performers change their strings every night. Dave does. Strings should be changed frequently depending upon how much you play, and how much your hands sweat. I change mine every 7-10 days.

every night? when i put new strings on, it takes a few days for them to stay in tune. the strings have to stretch out, and that takes time.
Im really suprised at this response. I had no idea you should change you're strings so often. Ive had my new guitar for like 5 months now and only changed 2 strings due to them snapping. Wow, what a revelation!
But i hate changing strings! Doh

yeah i didnt know you were suppose to change strings to often either. i had an guitar for a year and only changed one string. then i got a new guitar, when back to old one, and realized how bad those strings were. but i suck at restringing guitars.
For us living any other ways was nuts. with all the goodie-goodies working shitty jobs for bum pay checks, took the subway work and worried about their bills were dead. they were suckers, they had no balls. if we wanted something we just took it, and if anybody complained twice they got hit so hard believe me they never complained again

Yea I dont think I change them right. But I do it all the time.

yea they def do it everynight...first of all they want to minimize breakage, second of all new strings sound the best, third of all dave can afford it if he doesn't get em for free! lucky guy.

And to add to everyone else, I also suck at changing strings and usually ask if the person where I'm buying strings will just do it for me.. I'm looking forward to trying out these 'Elixir Nanowebs' many speak highly of this weekend, I've tried Martins and D'addarios in the past..
Hmm. Changing strings is pretty easy, and I actually enjoy doing it. It's very Zen, just me and the guitar. I like to clean and polish everything while I'm doing it, get the windings around the peg just right and have everything all nice and shiny and bright to go along with the tone of the new strings. It's quite relaxing and then you get to play with that fresh, crisp sound. I look forward to it every time. But maybe that's just me.

There's a technique (basically just pulling on them from both ends) to expedite that stretching method. Also, I'm sure you've noticed that both Dave and Tim have to retune a lot on stage, and when they don't, it's because Monk is retuning them offstage and they have freshly-tuned guitars when they switch them out.
