YES. Its always been my biggest worry about Dave, him fucking his voice over from smoking too much pot and cigs. I pray everyday that he quits. And soon.

The last DMB concert I went to they played All Along The Watchtower and the crowd was louder than Dave most of the time, doing all of the "improv" vocal stuff that he did on the last few live albums. (yeah yeah yeaaaaaaaah, that sort of thing) I was so pissed because i could barely hear him singing other stuff behind it, but no one noticed because they were too busy trying to sing along. That's when I gave up going to DMB concerts.

Dave is singing like that because Batson told him he should. Listen to You Might Die Trying and you'll hear the old Dave.

Personally I think Batson has done nothing to help this band. But that's just my opinion.

I'm not sure someone could alter their voice in this way at will. I'm no singer, but I don't see how it could be done...

You can't talk all scratchy and raspy? I know I can if I want to. On You Might Die Trying Dave's voice is definately not as raspy as it sounds on Smooth Rider. I think Dave can still sing without sounding raspy. I think smoking has taken a toll on his voice though. I have a recording of the band from 1990 and Dave's voice is so much higher than it is now.

Um, just listen to him live and listen to Stand Up. He just singing relaxed in Stand Up. There is no crowd and you have do-overs. Plus, they have said this is a "playing on your back porch"-album..so obviously its gonna be more relaxed. Live is much more intense so he sings differently (not as raspy).

But thats just my theory.

on roseland he sounded quite normal and like regular dave. not so raspy and scratchy as he does on some of stand up

i hate that whispering soft singing he does in his slow love ballad type things. it really annoys me. like out of my hands

umm the only one i can really think of is jimi thing. they should bring back the old jam. i don't mind hearing most of the other classics. but jimi thing is on almost every single live release. that's too much.

Cigarettes plus the screaming he does when singing is definitely not good for his voice.

Getting back to the point of the thread. I think I go through changes as far as what songs I like and dislike. After listening to a song a bunch of times it gets old, then you listen to a song that you haven't listened to for awhile and then you find out why you like that song. Or you just stop listening to DMB for awhile and come back appreciating it more.

I went 2 weeks for the first time since I started liking DMB, were I din't listen to 1 song. All I listened to was bands like Zeppelin, doobie brothers, Pearl Jam, James Taylor, etc. When I threw the DMB back in, it was refreshing.

For awhile #41 and two step were the songs I listened to all the time. Now they have gotten old so I listen to songs like JTR, what you are, pig. I'll go through phases were I listen to songs like fool to think or so right a lot. That is the beauty of their music is that they have so many songs, with so many different emotions and so many different melodies that you can attach to for awhile. Then there are songs like warehouse and the stone that haven't gotten old.

I don't know if it is just my musical taste, but I have found myself listening to more and more of D&T than DMB. I can't remember the last time I listened to something with the band.

Die Trying is the one that uses the classic dmb formula right? dave plays the riff then the band joins in?

I get so annoyed when i here some of the people on here saying they dont like going to Dave concerts becuase the crowd sings too loud or cause people through "trash" on the floor or because they shit there pants and there mommy wont wipe there ass for them!
Know how lucky you are to even have a chance of going to a Dave concert, because some of us arent so lucky!

Sucks to be you. However, being an american based band, they aren't obligated to tour the world. And, I too don't like people ruining concerts for me.
