i saw him in cincy in i think 2000 and he mentioned something how he hadnt smoked in 8 days and the crowd cheered. i read an article in rolling stone a bit later and the writer wrote something to the degree of dave going to the door to smoke a camel light. i will try to find the article
At a recording studio in Sausalito, California, Dave Matthews stands silhouetted in a doorway leading to a sunlit patio, smoking as he listens to his new album's opening track, "Busted Stuff."
The song rises and falls, casually crescendoing into bluesy flurries of guitar and violinist Boyd Tinsley's wah-wah effects. When the last note fades, Matthews crushes out his cigarette and flops happily into a chair at the control board. "Oh, I like that song," he says, grinning across the panel at producer Stephen Harris. "For something written by such a sad bastard, I do like it."

I can quit whenever I want. Seriously. I'll smoke for a few months and then just quit, cold turkey for however long. The I'll be like, "I think I'm gonna smoke for a bit," and smoke for a few months and then quit. I've quit for as long as two years, and over the last 8 years or so I've never smoked for more than, say, 6 months at a time. Currently I've been smoking for about 10 weeks, but I think I'll quit in the next couple of weeks or so, since I haven't been enjoying it as much. I've just been smoking when I drink or chief. Yeah, it's time to quit again.
On the topic, I think Dave smokes.

Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": The food court is downstairs. The cookie stand is upstairs. It's not like we're talking quantum physics here.

strength and honor.
Forget about the reasons and the treasons we are seeking
Forget about the notion that our emotions can be swept away, kept at bay
Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead
For soon we will all find our lives swept away
he does. on the 8-26-01 dvd his voice is shot and at the encore he comes out smoking a cigarette and rests it on the amp while he plays the final song...seems like a bad idea when your voice is gone, but maybe it truly does get his voice to sound so good?

I enjoy them. I've never tried to quit, although common sense says that day will come. I'm certainly not planning on it.
I like my cigs. I think I'll go have one.
not sure i'll ever understand. *shrug* to each his own.
I feel the same way about people who get drunk, myself.
It's fun, trust me. I wouldn't try to judge anything if I haven't tried it, so try it first and then tell me you don't understand why people do it. I used to have the same views as you did.

cant argue with that.
smoking effects everyone differently, some people it helps their voice:
me being one. if i am not smoking i sound horrible, HORRIBLE.

many others.
i hope no one here starts smoking because it can make your voice cool, cause 99% of the time it makes you so easily winded that you cant perform for more than 30min. it shoots your voice to shit, etc.
Kudos to those who never started, i wish I could say the same.
